| Transport-Moving |
The transport of cargo or freight may involve one mode or several modes, with the latter case being called intermodal or multimodal transport. Each mode has its advantages and disadvantages, and will be chosen for a trip on the basis of cost, capability, route, time and speed.
Intermodal freight/cargo transport involves the transportation of freight in an intermodal container or vehicle, using multiple modes of transportation (rail, ship, and truck), without any handling of the freight itself when changing modes. The method reduces cargo handling, and so improves security, reduces damages and losses, and allows freight to be transported faster.
Multimodal transportation means transportation of goods using different means of transport (air, rail, sea or road) under single contract.
This type of transportation is used in case of interstate or international movement of goods. People can also use only one mode of transport from sea, air, road, rail to transport their goods within country.
The following process can be used in selection of a transportation mode:
1) Inventory or stock estimation
2) Type of goods to be moved e.g. durable or fragile
3) Measurement of total weight and volume of the material to be transported
4) Distance to be moved: interstate or international
5) Budget estimation
6) Time in hand eg Air transport if time sensitive
